Heavy horse power goes on display for charity on 3rd May, at Yangan, a small township east of Warwick, and approximately 2 hours from Brisbane.  Funds raised at the event, held at Mike Bradford's property on the outskirts of Yangan, will go towards the RACQ Careflight helicopter service.

The day will showcase farming equipment from the 1800's and 1900's in the days when the horse power was really the power of the horse. See examples of farming equipment from the Sunshine Harvesters Works, Massey Harris, International Harvester Company, McCormick Deering and other manufacturers. Also see other farming activities on show from the 1800's and 1900's.  Cost is only $5 and the event starts at 9am.

NOTABLE HORSE TRANSPORT - THROUGHOUT AUSTRALIA WEEKLY Click on photo above  for more information.
Local trainer Lyle Plumb has kicked off to a perfect start with his two-year-olds, taking out the first Brisbane QTIS win of the season at Doomben on Saturday.

It was again Lyle’s handy colt Redhotjazz (C2 Sequalo-Jazz Lass) who dominated after showing early potential at the recent 2YO trails at Doomben on September 8.

Redhotjazz outclassed the field in the Jess Bognar Freshman QTIS 2YO Colts and Geldings Handicap 1010m, taking the title a half a head from Feline Hunter (Sheree Drake) in second and a further two and a half lengths back to Falco Star (Shane Scriven) in third.

The classy two-year-old was purchased at the beginning of the year at the Magic Millions sales.

29,30 September and 1 October saw the finals of the Easy Traveller Trailers Queensland Inter-School Equestrian Championships covering Showhorse, Dressage, Combined Training and Showjumping disciplines and involving some 200 riders representing 74 schools throughout Queensland over the three days. This is quite an achievement given all who rode had to attain qualifying performances in order to compete.

The Eventing Championships had previously been held at Kooralbyn and results from this were included in the overall award.  This was our first year away from the Darling Downs region in some 22 years and the venue at Maryborough Park provided a high standard of facilities for riders, spectators and organisers, with well prepared competition arenas and good camping and stabling.

Overall results saw the Champion Equestrian School of Queensland trophy (the Lorette Wigan Cup) won again by Brisbane Girls Grammar School, upholding their record of taking out this award over many years.

The Overall Champion Individual Rider at Secondary School level ( the Brett Family Trophy) was Calista Green from John Paul College on her horse The Dream Machine.

In the Primary Schools competition, The Glennie School won the overall award, the Harry le Bherz Trophy for Champion Primary School and they also took out the QISEA Primary School Aggregate Award.

The Overall Champion Individual Rider at Primary School level (the Kimberley Banks Family Trophy) was Kayla Kolb from St Andrew’s School on her horse Penbar Effie.

The Champion Aggregate Score School Award donated by well known showjumping family Rita and Derek Dobson was taken by the riders from Warwick State High School whose strong performances over all the events made them deserving recipients.

Top polocrosse horse shot dead in paddock
In an apparently random act, top polocrosse horse, Mustang Cadbury, was shot twice in the heart and lungs as he grazed in a paddock at Carbrook on October 30.

The horse was apparently shot from bushland opposite the property, and police will conduct ballistics tests on two bullets in order to trace the killer.

Mustang Cadbury was due to be ridden in April 2007 in the World Polocrosse Cup in Warwick by a South African team member.

Artificial Tracks to Reduce Racehorse Injuries
Supply options for artificial track surfaces for the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast and Toowoomba were discussed enthusiastically at the recent Queensland Owners and Breeders Association annual general meeting.  No time frame has yet been given for the implementation of the new track surfaces, but feedback from the executive was very positive.

The tracks consist of sand, synthetic fibres, and synthetic rubber, and have a more even composition across the track, with improved drainage allowing all-weather racing.  On major US tracks after installation of the artifical track surfaces, breakdown and euthanasia statistics have dropped dramatically.  From a jockey and horse safety point of view, the tracks are considered well worth the initial expense of installation.

1,100 turn up for Monty Roberts' Toowoomba clinic
21 and 22nd April, Toowoomba Showgrounds
Monty Roberts gave two full day demonstration at the Toowoomba Showgrounds on 21 and 22 April.

During the day on Saturday, he had an unbroken Irish Sport Horse with rider up, moving calmly around the yard within 30 minutes, and solved behavioural problems with four other horses, that were difficult to load, wouldn't stand to be mounted, spooked easily, or kicked the farrier.

His methods were gentle, effective, and worked quickly, gaining the trust of the horse using a combination of eye-contact cues, body positioning, and patterns of behaviour which horses understand instinctively.  Monty calls this the "language of Equus" and commented that horses from all continents seem to understand it equally well.

The 1100 spectators were suitably impressed, and went away with much food for thought.  See www.montyroberts.com.au

Save $1500 by returning your ASB mare
Even if you are using your ASB mare to breed sport horses, paints, anglos, etc, did you know that you can return her to the thoroughbred studbook for only $44 a year as "not served" by an ASB sire, and avoid an $1100 reinstatment fee, $250 DNA testing fee, and about $150 for a vet to do an identification certificate, if she is dropped from the official record and you want to breed her to an ASB sire again?

Keeping your mare returns up-to-date will ensure her resale value remains high, as prospective buyers will shy away from mares that are not returned because of the expense involved in reinstating them.

Go to www.studbook.org.au/Fees.aspx for more information or call 02 9663 8411

Australians beat UK in Polocrosse World Cup Final
Polocrosse World Cup Morgan Park, Warwick
23 – 29th April 2007
The Polocrosse World Cup was held in Warwick this year, from 23 - 29th April, at Morgan Park.  The Australians were once again victorious, beating surprise finalists the UK, 36 to 13.

Polocrosse is a fast-paced, exciting game which demands great athleticism , stamina and lightning-fast reflexes from both horse and rider.  The world cup team includes both male and female riders, with each gender playing alternate chukkas, a marvellous format which pitches male players against male players, and female players against female players, yet still enables mixed teams to play.  Whole families can play on the same team at club level in Australia, which might explain the growing popularity of the sport.

See the Polocrosse Australia website for more information: www.polocrosse.com.au.

Yangan Hosts Gentle Giants
World Cup competitors locked in at Morgan park, Warwick
Morgan Park, Warwick
World Cup competitors and their horses are locked in under quarantine conditions at Morgan Park in Warwick after 30 horses tested positive to the Equine influenza virus yesterday.

Competitors have mostly chosen to remain with their animals.  No fatalities in horses have been recorded, and most horses are expected to make a full recovery, but will require several months of rest before resuming competition.

The lockdown was initiated after three horses tested positive to the virus before the competition ended on Sunday.
